Similar to other reviews, water boiled over and some liquid got underneath the knobs. There was lots of popping noises, smoke and FLAMES. I had someone come to look at it, and they said 1) that this was vey poorly designed and will probably happen again and 2) because the cooktop is glass, they will not make the repair because they do not want to be liable if the glass breaks (the glass is glued to the countertop). I hope KitchenAid has a recall on this appliance. It is dangerous!

After initial difficulties I am enjoying it

Now that an in-warranty technician has adjusted the burners so they light properly and the flame is the right height, I am happy with this cooktop. Initially the left front burner did not light properly. Best Buy swapped out the unit no questions asked, but the second cooktop did the exact same thing! (In the reviews I saw someone else had this same experience.) The technician resolved the issue, but it would be much less work for the customer if they rolled off the assembly line with all burners adjusted properly. Aside from this initial problem, here are some of my other assessments. This cooktop cooks very nicely! The power and control are excellent, and I am very happy with the cooking results. Design wise, the black glass is very sleek, but the grates look awfully big. They are very prominent visually and are a little challenging to move and clean. (In order to clean the glass, you have to move the grates.) But everything cleans up nicely with soapy water. The burner caps keep spills out from the working parts and lend a professional look and feel to the cooktop. As other people stated, it is sometimes a little challenging to center pots over the flames, and things feel a little cramped when using multiple burners. My smallest pots wobble a little, which didn't happen on my old JennAir. Anyway, had I not had the initial lighting issue, I would have rated it 4 stars instead of 3 because I do very much enjoy the cooking results.

Okay if you usually do takeout.

I remodeled my kitchen two yrs ago and unfortunately purchased this cook top. There have been 4 occasions, starting just shortly after installation, when I either had a small spillover, or used a sponge a bit too wet, and a little water must have gotten into the the unit. It sparked a lot, flames were visible under the ignition switch, and I smelled what seemed like an electrical fire. I'm 55 yrs old and have been cooking my whole life. I've NEVER had a problem with a stove before. Each time Kitchenaid sent a repair crew to fix it,despite the obvious design flaw (see other reviews with the same complaint). Finally, they've agreed to replace the unit, after some negotiation, for the full MSRP of the unit($1199), but only if I purchase from among their models. Unfortunately, this unit has dimensions that are difficult to match, and there's no one in customer service to help me find a compatible unit to meet my needs. So far, I've not found anything that suits my needs. If I request cash back to purchase from another company (Miele has the unit with the closest dimention) I will only get $954.28 and the rest is on me. Why a lower amt? B/c , they say, it's an older unit. Older unit? It's been an unsafe and problematic unit from the start.

HATE this cooktop !!

This cooktop came with the house we bought so I don't know when it was purchased. There is a lot of gap underneath the knobs that liquid will go through ! TWICE in the last week, the spark ignition switch harness burned with loud red popping noises under the glass. It's come to a point where my wife feels so unsafe in the house because both times it happened when we were not using the cooktop :( It's a shame really that the knobs are on the same level as the burners with no protection. I've already spent so much money on the repair once, not repairing it again ! Please buy a cooktop where the knobs are not at the same level as burners. It's a very easy thing to look over until it happens to you...

This cooktop is not a standard size so my counter cutout was an inch bigger causing me a problem to cover that big gap behind. Furthermore, the foam strip that was supposed to go all around the four sides only covered the front side. What a dissapointment.

Burned out twice

We have had this model for 7 years and recently experienced our second major breakdown. Liquid can seep beneath the ceramic surface and short out working components. Also, the grate is not designed to fit exactly over the burners on the side where the large burner is located. This makes centering a pot a careful and tedious endeavor. Poor engineering. Looks good but having to replace it much to soon.

Haven't been able to use since Kitchenaid now makes their cooktops 21 inches deep just like all others. We have lived in our home for over 20 years and have Corian countertops. We had a gas cooktop that we are replacing with the Kitchenaid, but the older cooktop was deeper so our cutout is too large for the new one. I'm having to repair the Corian to fit the new cooktop.....NOT HAPPY

Great cooktop

This is my first cooktop. I have been very happy with it. The black glass top is very easy to clean. I was looking for a cooktop to go with my black stainless appliances and this cooktop matches beautifully.

Beautiful Cooktop grate price

I by at the end of November and install on Dec 8 of this year, the cooktop has a Burner problem and the service in Puerto Rico was grate their fixed on forty eights hours after I call for service.

I have had the old style of this cooktop in a different house and wasn't sure about the glass top. Well, I couldn't be happier. It is very easy to clean - even homemade spaghetti sauce wiped right off with no staining. The different sized burners make cooking with right sized pot with right sized flam so much easier; and, it forces you to use all the burners which really is better for the life of the cooktop.

Great looking and great features

I used the stove for the first time. I am very pleased with the stove overall. The only thing I find are the grates are very heavy. Also liquid spilled on the grate while cooking. I was not able to completely clean the spill. There are two spots which remained on the grate. I hope this does not keep happening as the grates might not last too long.

Happy with my Kitchenaid cooktop

I replaced my old cooktop with a new kitchenaid 4 burner cooktop. I am very happy with it. I chose black with glass top and was able with no trouble to have controls moved to center instead of the side.
